Chris Guthrie is the Dean and John Wade-Kent Syverud Professor of Law at Vanderbilt Law School.


Chris is a leading expert on behavioral law and economics, dispute resolution, negotiation and judicial decision making, and he has been recognized for his research and teaching with two CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution Professional Article Prizes, the Outstanding First-Year Course Professor Award at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, and multiple teaching and research prizes at the University of Missouri. He is one of the authors of the influential textbook Dispute Resolution and Lawyers and has published more than 50 scholarly articles and essays in leading law journals.

Chris practiced law with Fenwick & West in Palo Alto, California before joining the faculty at the University of Missouri School of Law. In 2002, he joined the faculty at Vanderbilt Law School, serving as associate dean from 2004-8 and as dean since in 2009. He is a member of the AccessLex Institute Board of Directors and previously served on the board of the Law School Admission Council (LSAC).


Chris received his BA from Stanford University, his EdM from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and his JD from Stanford Law School.
